The Egyptian spring onion season is underway again for Freeland. "We do a fair amount of year-round imports from Egypt, especially of onions and pumpkins, and spring onions are a nice addition to this during the winter season," said Jordi van den Bosch. Freeland supplies mostly customers in the food service sector throughout Europe.

The Egyptian onion season traditionally runs from late October to mid-March. "During the summer season, many customers resort to German suppliers; in winter, they generally look for us," says Jordi. "However, we cannot take things for granted, as one year is not necessarily like the next. One year, we may lose customers because they start importing themselves, and the next year they come back because it wasn't as easy as they expected. We choose to work with a long-term perspective, offering good quality spring onions from Egypt year after year. For us, it is a nice business in the winter period. It's often in and out quickly, which keeps the pressure on."

"Qualitatively, this year's crop is good, both in terms of volume and quality. Last year there was quite a bit of sand in the product due to the sandstorms, but fortunately, we haven't had an issue with that this year," says Jordi. "This season, sales are going well and prices are reasonable. The very early spring onions achieved great success this season. However, it often remains to be seen what everyone will order at the last minute. Often the goods from several importers will arrive on one boat, and when that happens, the price can drop quite a bit."
