Egypt's blueberry boom attracts international nursery investment
The blueberry market is entering a new phase of transformation across the Mediterranean. The search for more productive varieties with better flavor and earlier harvest windows is accelerating the adoption of new breeding programs in countries such as Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and Italy. In these markets, the strategy is no longer just about offering innovative genetics, "but about ensuring that genetics reach their full potential in the field," says José María Martín, technical director of Grupo Caliplant. "That is why, through our Viveros Caliplant nursery division, we provide hands-on technical support to ensure the success of growers who decide to establish a new planting or renew the genetics on their farm with the new premium varieties now coming to market."
Viveros Caliplant is a nursery specializing in plant production with extensive prior experience in citrus, pomegranate, and table grapes. It is currently the authorized nursery for the production of Bloom Fresh™ blueberry varieties Alessia™ and Abril™.
"We have managed to work with the best breeders and consolidate this position by producing plants to very high quality standards, with extremely thorough process control," says José María. "We pay close attention to every step, especially during the vegetative propagation phase, and that allows us to deliver a plant that performs very well in the field and develops in a highly satisfactory way."
"But we wanted to go a step further and support all the growers cultivating our plants, with in-person technical visits and continuous monitoring that begins even before the young plants leave our facilities, including advice on proper soil preparation and the selection of growing media or initial substrates."
