Egypt has made a historical breakthrough in the Moroccan market in the MY 2022/23 by more than doubling its export volume of dates. This rapid growth in exports made Egypt the second-largest supplier of dates to Morocco. Over the 11 months of the past MY, from October 2022 to September 2023, Egypt exported 32,000 tons of dates to Morocco, a volume that's two and a half times as much in the entire MY 2021/22. Notably, Egyptian exporters were able to significantly extend their presence in the Moroccan market, setting records for shipments at its very start, from October to December. Despite being the second largest date importer in the world and having its own substantive production, Morocco imports almost one-third of its fruit and vegetable imports in terms of value, making it a significant market for Egyptian dates. However, weather risks and ambitious plans to replace aging palm trees with varieties more adapted to the changing climate are being discussed in the country.
