For the first time in history, Egypt has emerged as the largest supplier of sweet potatoes to the Scandinavian market in the MY 2022/23 (July-June). That's according to EastFruit, which emphasizes that Egypt was able to provide about a third of the total sweet potato imports to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway within the past season. Egypt managed to double its supply to these markets, totaling 3,700 tons of sweet potatoes from July 2022 to June 2023. In comparison, its supply in the previous season was almost half of this amount. The MY 2017/18 saw Egyptian sweet potato shipments to Scandinavia increase by 51 times, doubling annually. Interestingly, Egypt claimed the top spot among sweet potato suppliers to this market in the 2022/23 MY. In comparison, the Netherlands, the United States, and Spain exported minimal quantities of sweet potatoes to Scandinavia within the last six seasons. According to Yevhen Kuzin, a Fruit and Vegetable Market Analyst at EastFruit, the previous sweet potato export season was a milestone for Egyptian suppliers. Kuzin notes that Egypt significantly increased its presence in one of the most sought-after markets globally and reduced its dependence on re-exporters from the Netherlands. Subsequently, Egypt heightened its own direct sales proportion to Scandinavia. Importantly, Egypt has continued to usurp the sweet potato market share within many other European countries from the United States.
