IWAVE 2011 - Acoustics and Vibrations between Egypt and Sweden

Eighth Swedish-Egyptian Workshop in Sound and Vibration Research starts in Egypt, aiming at promoting science and research all over the country.
The Acoustical Society of Egypt held its annual International Workshop on Acoustics and Vibrations in Egypt (IWAVE) on the 22nd – 23rd of October 2011 at the Faculty of Engineering of Ain Shams University.

The Eighth Swedish-Egyptian Workshop in Sound and Vibration Research was seen as a successful cooperation between the two countries, with local and Swedish professors and keynote speakers holding workshops for Egyptian students and evaluating the latter’s projects in the field.

The event was organized by ASU-GARDS (Group for Advanced Research in Dynamic Systems).

Dr. Tamer ElNady, President of the Acoustical Society in Cairo and an organizer of the event, stated that one of the main objectives of the workshop was to provide a meeting place for regional researchers in different fields related to acoustics and vibrations with applications of local importance.

Aiming at introducing Egypt to the latest international developments, the organizing committee decided to give young Egyptian researchers (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students) from all over the country a chance to promote their unique projects and ideas by presenting them during the workshop.

Financial awards were given to the best two presentations, chosen by the content of the projects and the researcher’s presentation skills. First prize went to Noha AboulFotoh from Cairo University for her presentation on “Open loop self-tunable vibration-based electromagnetic Energy Harvester”, and the second prize went to Amr Adel Mohamed from the Higher Technological Institute for his project about “Monitoring the Wind Turbine Blades using the Acoustics Emission Method”.

Yet, the workshop did not end there. On the 26th – 27th of October 2011, IWAVE continues its path by teaching attendees advanced courses on “Building Acoustics”.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the European Commission through TEMPUS and FP7 programs, the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsradet), and the Science & Technology Development Fund (STDF) in Egypt.
