Egypt is making significant strides toward sustainable mobility with a groundbreaking partnership between the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Infinity, and Hassan Allam Utilities. This initiative is set to revolutionize the country's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure by deploying a widespread network of charging stations. The partnership aims to install both alternate current (AC) and direct current (DC) chargers at key filling stations nationwide. Hassan Allam Utilities, the development arm of one of Egypt’s most prominent engineering and construction firms, brings the necessary infrastructure capabilities to execute this ambitious plan. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum, represented by state-owned entities Misr Petroleum and Gastec, plays a crucial role in integrating the new EV charging stations into existing fuel distribution hubs.

Despite Egypt’s push toward electric mobility, EV adoption remains in its infancy. Currently, EVs account for only 0.1% of the local automobile market, with around 5,000 units in circulation. A primary barrier has been the underdeveloped charging network, which has slowed consumer confidence in making the switch to electric vehicles.

One of the key issues has been the limited capacity of Egypt’s charging stations. While many European countries offer high-capacity chargers of up to 150 kilowatts per hour, Egypt’s stations max out at 48 kilowatts per hour. This results in longer charging times—ranging from 30 minutes to two hours—making EV ownership less convenient for potential buyers. By enhancing charging station capacities and ensuring more widespread availability, the new initiative directly addresses these concerns, paving the way for increased EV sales and usage.

Beyond the environmental benefits of reducing carbon emissions, this initiative also aligns with Egypt’s broader energy diversification strategy. The government has been actively exploring renewable energy options, with EV infrastructure being a key part of the puzzle.
