Everything will be automated
Amazon automates tips, AI writes better advertising emails than humans, and more in this week's podcast from Egypt Business.
In this week’s podcast with Dr. Torsten Schwarz, CEO of Egypt Business Directory we explore these topics:
Amazon automates tips
You as a customer can say “Alexa, thank my driver” and the driver gets $5 automatically as a tip for delivering packages in the busy Christmas season. Only the first 1million drivers to get thanked by customers will benefit from this offer.
The reason for this campaign is the upcoming milestone of 15 billion parcels being delivered from amazon this time of year.
The 5 most thanked drivers each will get $10,000 as a bonus and $10,000 donated to a charity of their choice. This campaign cost amazon $5.1 million, that’s comparable to $4.3million they spent on anti-union consultants, and is being criticised for it.
What do we learn from this as companies? Don’t do PR campaigns if the company doesn’t live by what they try to promote to us.
Switzerland to say goodbye to ticket vending machines
The machines will be turned off by 2035, as rail and bus tickets in Switzerland will have to be bought on mobile or PC, which is already increasingly happening, as the machines are expensive to operate.
Vending machines will only be used for physical good, not products or services that can be bought online.
AI writes better advertising emails
Sellscale from San Francisco said we want to let go of the “Spray and Pray” model of advertising emails to make more personalised messages and automated emails, they have GPT3, they will use it to craft more personal emails. The result was 70% more qualified conversations, so personalization works.
However, purely automated personalization is very difficult and can be a failure.
Open AI improves chatbot
We all know open AI through DALL-E and GPT, now that have ChatGPT, that answers questions and follow ups in a dialogue with you, you can test it free of charge. Just don’t ask how burglary in a house works best, it won’t answer, but if you ask how to secure your house it will have many tips for you.
This is the problem with automation, you don’t want certain things automated, like crime.
What do we learn from this as companies? We have to improve our customer service, the best is personal service, but if you have automated service, like chatbots, make sure you use one that gives better answers to your customers’ questions.
Car accidents on ski slopes?
Of course, there are no cars on ski slopes, but the accident detection feature from iPhone has been mistaking ski turns and fast winding downhills for accidents and making emergency calls. The police in mid county Utah in the USA, which is near a ski resort, reported 3-5 false alarms every day.
The same problem with false reports happened with roller coaster, even though Apple watches’ accident feature works better than iPhone’s, the whole thing can be a proof that automation doesn’t always work.
