Hyundai Rotem Targets Egypt's Hydrogen Tram Market with Accelerated Push
Hyundai Rotem is positioning itself as a frontrunner in Egypt’s emerging hydrogen tram market, spotlighting its zero-emission rail technology at TransMEA 2025, the country’s largest mobility and logistics exhibition. With the North African nation planning to introduce hydrogen-electric trams in its massive new administrative capital east of Cairo — a city set to house over six million residents — Rotem is promoting its ability to deliver both rolling stock and the enabling infrastructure under Hyundai’s “HTWO” hydrogen brand.
At the company’s booth in New Cairo, visitors experienced a hydrogen tram through a virtual reality simulation set against iconic Egyptian landmarks like the pyramids and Sphinx. Hyundai Rotem also exhibited a 3D model of a green hydrogen value chain, illustrating a system that starts with biogas-based hydrogen production and connects to hydrogen refueling stations and vehicles such as trams. This presentation comes on the heels of successful tram demonstrations and hydrogen vehicle commercialisation in South Korea, which Rotem aims to replicate abroad.
A Hyundai Rotem official said, “Based on our hydrogen technology that encompasses everything from production to utilization, such as hydrogen electric trams and hydrogen infrastructure, we will introduce an integrated hydrogen solution optimized for Egypt’s new administrative capital.” They added, “As a leading player in K-railway, we will do our best to contribute to cooperation in the railway industries of both countries in celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Egypt.”
