Egypt has announced a landmark seismic survey in the Eastern Mediterranean aimed at unlocking new gas reserves. The project will cover up to 95,000 km² using state-of-the-art exploration technologies, reports Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi noted that the initiative is central to Egypt’s strategy of strengthening its role as a regional energy hub. By generating high-resolution subsurface data, the survey is expected to cut exploration risks and attract greater investment from international energy companies.

The project has been awarded to a consortium and will be rolled out in three phases over seven years. The first phase, set for 2026, will span 18,000 km² at a cost of US$117 million.

The main objective of the initiative is to support new drilling campaigns and boost domestic gas output, which the ministry has identified as a top priority.
