Egypt and Jordan have inaugurated the “Coral Bridge” submarine cable, the first direct digital link between the two countries in more than a quarter century.

The landing took place in Egypt’s Taba on Saturday, witnessed via videoconference by Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat and Jordan’s Digital Economy Minister Sami Al-Samirat, according to an official statement.

Stretching 15 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, the high-capacity cable is equipped with advanced optical fibers designed to handle soaring demand from artificial intelligence applications and data centers. It also enables seamless international data traffic between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

The project, a collaboration between Telecom Egypt and Jordan’s Naitel, strengthens both countries’ positions as regional digital hubs while providing alternative routes and backup connections for major enterprises and cloud service providers.
