Egypt to turn Port Said Shipyard into global maritime hub
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), met with representatives from Cyprus-based UW Group to discuss potential collaboration aimed at transforming the Port Said Shipyard into a leading international center for shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair.
The talks focused on the prospect of forming a strategic partnership to attract new investments that would upgrade the shipyard’s capabilities—positioning it as a global hub not only for shipbuilding and repair but also for sustainable ship recycling using eco-friendly technologies.
Rabie underscored the Authority’s ambition to foster meaningful cooperation with top-tier international players in the maritime services sector.
He emphasized that such partnerships could bring significant benefits, including advanced technology transfer, specialized training for the local workforce, and valuable knowledge exchange—ultimately boosting the competitiveness of SCA’s shipyards and reinforcing their status as a cost-effective, high-quality destination for maritime services.
Rabie reiterated the Suez Canal Authority’s dedication to modernizing the Port Said Shipyard into a state-of-the-art facility that delivers cutting-edge services in line with the latest global standards.
He also highlighted the Authority’s commitment to exploring new service areas, such as container repair and environmentally responsible ship dismantling, as part of its broader green transformation strategy.
Vassilios Demetriades, Strategic Advisor to UW Group, echoed this vision, expressing confidence in the promising future of the Port Said Shipyard.
He emphasized the importance of creating an environmentally conscious, future-ready shipyard that can keep pace with the fast-evolving maritime industry.
