A historic High-Speed Rail Link between Saudi Arabia and Egypt is nearing construction, as both nations finalize plans for a route connecting Ras Hamid and Sharm el-Sheikh. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The link will span the Strait of Tiran through either a bridge or tunnel. Officials confirmed that technical planning is complete, and implementation will begin soon, fulfilling a vision first introduced by King Salman in 2016.

High-Speed Rail Link to Bridge Continents and Economies

Once operational, the High-Speed Rail Link will not only connect two countries but also provide a strategic connection between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

It will integrate with Egypt’s national rail system, allowing seamless travel from the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean. The project will also support Saudi Arabia’s NEOM megacity by enhancing infrastructure in the region.

The estimated cost of the bridge or tunnel is around $4 billion, with plans to carry both passengers and cargo. This route will create new opportunities for trade and tourism, reinforcing economic cooperation between the two nations.

Egypt Invests in Domestic High-Speed Network

While the cross-border project advances, Egypt is building out its internal high-speed rail. A $7.8 billion network will stretch over 2,000 km, connecting Sokhna Port to Alexandria, and extending as far as Aswan.

The line will avoid archaeological sites like Abydos, balancing infrastructure growth with heritage preservation. Construction partners include Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction, and Arab Contractors.

These coordinated developments are transforming the region’s transportation landscape. The new connection will simplify cross-border mobility and strengthen strategic ties through modern, sustainable rail.

In summary, the Saudi-Egypt project is more than a High-Speed Rail Link—it’s a blueprint for regional unity, economic integration, and advanced mobility across three continents.
