Russia and Egypt marked a significant milestone in their strategic partnership by announcing the construction of the al-Dabaa nuclear power plant, pegged to be the largest in the world. The construction of the power plant is scheduled to begin on October 6, handily aligning with Egypt's October War victory holiday. The initial details were broadcast by RT, showcasing what is to be expected. It's noteworthy that the first nuclear piece will be installed in the reactor after final preparations that are currently underway. The Russian ambassador to Cairo shared that this ambitious project will serve as a symbol of the strong friendship between the two nations. Upon completion, which is scheduled for next year, the power plant will hold the title of the biggest nuclear reactor worldwide. The initial foundation pouring for the fourth reactor is lined up for November, pending construction permit approval from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority. The significant project materialized after Egypt and Russia signed a cooperation agreement back in November 2015 to build an atomic energy station. The agreement entailed investment costs of US$25 billion, with Russia investing a soft government loan. The final agreements were inked by Presidents Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Vladimir Putin in December 2017. The Dabaa station is set to comprise four “Three +” generation reactors working with pressurized water, generating a capacity of 4,800 megawatts. The International Atomic Energy Agency has validated the project, which is being overseen by the Russian nuclear energy giant, Rosatom.
