The consortium constructing the new farm includes French utility company Engie and Japan's Toyota Tsusho Corporation, according to a Cabinet statement on Wednesday.

The new wind farm will supply energy for two million consumers and create 7,000 jobs, according to Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker.

The farm is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 6.8 million tons annually, added Shaker.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) signed an MoU with the Orascom-led consortium for the construction and operation of the West Sohag wind farm on the sidelines of the COP27 summit in November 2022.

The consortium has contributed to building wind power projects in Egypt with a total capacity of 762.5 megawatts, according to Khaled El Degwy,  the Executive Director for Concessions at Orascom Construction.

In June 2023, Egypt updated its Nationally Determined Contributions to reduce its carbon footprint.

The updated plan includes more ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and securing the necessary finances to achieve them.
