The satellite was built using a $92 million grant provided by China to fund two projects in Egypt that was signed in February 2022.

MisrSat 2, also called EgyptSat 2, will take images of Egyptian soil to help preserve the environment and serve research purposes.

The grant also funded the construction of a satellite assembly and testing centre in Egypt.

Egypt is the first country in the world to implement a joint satellite manufacturing programme with China. This will turn Egypt into a regional hub for the industry, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang stated.

In March, Egypt launched its second remote-sensing satellite from China, Horus 2, after the launch of Horus 1 in February.

The Egyptian Space Agency (EGSA) was formed in January 2018.

The new satellite should not be confused with another Egyptian remote sensing satellite with the same name that was launched in 2014, but has since been lost.
