Egypt’s Alkahera Company for Ferries and Maritime Transport (KCFMT) has placed an order at South Korean yard, Dae Sun Shipbuilding, for two multipurpose vessels.

An affiliate of the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, which currently operates two ferries Cairo and Riyadh, will see the newbuilds delivered in February and April 2025.

“The two ships will facilitate the export of Egyptian products to regional markets, being able to transport general cargo, bulk cargo, heavy cargo, vehicles, project cargo, and refrigerated products, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood, said Kamel El-Wazir,” Egypt’s Minister of Transport.

No price has been revealed for the 14,000 dwt units, which will have a capacity of 700 teu and 98 teu of reefers. El-Wazir said there is a plan to support Alkahera with four additional ships, which could potentially bring its fleet to eight.
