Thanks in part to its 25 January revolution that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt was the most re-tweeted hashtags on Twitter for 2011, new statistics from the micro-blogging site said.

The statistics, which also showed Apple and other technology-based hashtags received much attention, were published as part of Twitter’s year-end review.

The hashtag #Jan25, the beginning of the Egyptian uprising against Mubarak’s government, was the 8th most popular tending topic on the website and was 8th most popular, Twitter said.

Also popular from the country were Cairo, Egypt and Hosni Mubarak, showing the massive international appeal of the Arab Spring and the uprisings that began in Tunisia in January.

Other topics such as Maalesh and Libya – both prominent in the Arab world – also captivated the Twittersphere, going viral and gaining traction internationally.
