B.A.U.M. Jury honors Egyptian in Hamburg this month

Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish is awarded the International B.A.U.M. prize in 2011

Cairo, 10 September 2011

The German Environmental Management Association (B.A.U.M.) has decided to award Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, the Egyptian organic agriculture pioneer, at its annual meeting held on 22 and 23 September in Hamburg.

German Environment Minister Dr. Norbert Röttgen and Hamburg’s mayor Olaf Scholz will attend the honoring ceremony and will award the International B.A.U.M. Prize together with the B.A.U.M. Management.

Dr. Abouleish will be awarded for being a promoter of sustainable development in the Middle East. He has launched the SEKEM Initiative for Sustainable Development in Egypt in 1977. It has been the backbone of numerous SEKEM activities and projects in several fields, notably in organic agriculture, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical and food products, textiles and cotton. Moreover, social development institutions and NGOs emerged from the SEKEM Initiative.

Since 1993, the German Environmental Management Association honors every year long-time outstanding commitment for environmental protection and sustainable development in different categories.

Since over 26 years, the German Environmental Management Association (B.A.U.M. e.V. ) sensitizes companies, municipalities and organizations about the opportunities of preventive environmental protection and sustainable business and supports them in the realization. Under the slogan “ fulfilling societal responsibility! Success factor sustainability”, over 300 experts from the economic sector, politics, science and media will convene under the patronage of the mayor of Hamburg Olaf Scholz to exchange views on the potentials of sustainable business.
