GM's joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) is planning to start assembly of its Chevrolet Move in Egypt while the vehicle kits will be supplied from China.

The production of Chevrolet Move is expected to start in the third quarter of 2012, and the automaker plans to produce about 5,000 units a year.

The new vehicle will be the first Chinese vehicle assembled by GM in Egypt and the first SGMW vehicle assembled outside China.

The move will help SAIC-GM-Wuling to increase output and improve its competitiveness in Egypt and other African markets.

SGMW president Shen Yang said the introduction of Chevrolet Move will help the company expand market in Egypt and also seek more opportunities to cover the market in North Africa and Arabia Free Trade Zone.

"Besides, it also helps SGMW to increase its export volume and further expand the competitiveness of sales and products," Yang said.

The company said that additional body styles are planned based on the Chevrolet Move (N300) platform for production in Egypt.

GM currently produces light commercial vehicles, light duty trucks and passenger vehicles in Egypt, it sold nearly 68,000 vehicles in the region in 2010.

Established in 2002, SGMW is a joint venture between GM China, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation Group (SAIC) and Wuling Motors.
