The Conference aims to find solutions not only for the major challenges facing the region, such as provision of water and energy, but also to address sustainable housing development in Egypt.

The Conference is being organised by the German University in Cairo (GUC) and the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GACIC).

The Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) conference series were initiated in 1994. Since then the SBE conference series cycle takes place every three years.

Main theme of the SBE16Cairo Conference is to INTEGRATE PEOPLE - PROCESS - TECHNOLOGY.

Major goals of the conference include focussing on the integration of stakeholders, as well as the integration of interdisciplinary knowledge and efforts as the only way forward for a sustainable future. Furthermore a key factor of the conference is to demonstrate the applicability of integration of the three main aspects people, process, and technology in the scientific research as well as in the regional and international industry forums and exhibitions.

The SBE 16 main themes of the conference are:

* A rapidly urbanised environment
* Technology and a smart built environment
* Legislation and assessment tools
* Innovative proactive training and education
* Mega-projects - case studies

Part of the conference is also a design competition for students and young professionals (up to 35 years) and is intended to go in line with the main theme of the conference, which is to "INTEGRATE"™.

More precisely, the task for the competition is to design an integrated plan for an informal housing area, located in the suburbs of Cairo. The design is required to go in line with the social, as well as technological aspects regarding a sustainable built environment.
