Egypt has 74.5 million mobile users

Recently released numbers from Egypt’s ministry of telecommunications indicates that mobile users in Egypt have reached 74.5 million people with Vodafone Egypt on top as the biggest mobile services provider in the country with 32.6 million subscribers. The number of users were calculated through April 2011.

Mobinil came in second with 30 million clients, followed by Etisalat with 11.8 million.

Mobinil numbers have seen a sharp decrease after Naguib Sawiris, CEO of Orascom Telecom, the company that owns Mobinil Egypt, faced controversy for sharing what many called an “offensive” cartoon featuring cartoon characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed in an Islamic manner.

Sawiris apologized for the picture he shared on his personal Twitter account and called it a “joke.”

Many of Mobinil customers have since transferred their business to the other two companies.
