Egypt bank to trace NGOs’ bank accounts

Local banks were requested to notify the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) and the Ministry of Social Solidarity about any bank accounts or transactions by civil society organisations amid accusations that such groups receive foreign funds.

"The Central Bank attempts to trace the sources of funds given to civil society organisations and charities, which jeopardise Egypt's national security," a CBE official said.

He added that the CBE has also requested the local banks to ensure that all civil society organisations obtain a proper licence from the Ministry of Social Solidarity.
