The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will hold the 38th edition of its Ground Handling Conference (IGHC) in Cairo, Egypt, from May 19–21, 2026, bringing together global aviation stakeholders to discuss the future of airport ground operations.

The event will be hosted by EgyptAir under the theme “Adapting Ground Operations in an Era of AI,” highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence, automation, and digital tools in improving safety, efficiency, and operational resilience.

According to IATA Director of Ground Operations Monika Mejstrikova, the rapid increase in air traffic and rising operational complexity are pushing the industry to adopt smarter solutions that combine technology with human expertise, particularly in high-pressure and resource-constrained environments.

EgyptAir Chairman Capt. Ahmed Adel said hosting the conference in Cairo reflects Egypt’s strategic role as a regional aviation hub linking Africa, the Middle East, and other global markets. He added that the event will help strengthen collaboration across the ground handling sector and improve overall operational performance.

The conference will bring together senior aviation leaders, including Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Sameh El-Hefny, alongside industry executives and IATA officials.

Sessions will cover key topics such as workforce transformation, capacity constraints, digitalisation, operational resilience, and fuel cost volatility. Other discussions will focus on airline–ground handler partnerships, human factors in operations, baggage data sharing, safety risks including mobility aids and lithium batteries, and preparations for the EU Ground Handling Regulation expected in 2028.

The agenda will also address updates to the Standard Ground Handling Agreement (SGHA), aimed at improving global consistency and efficiency in ground operations.
