Archaeologists Found 43,000 Ancient Egyptian ‘Sticky Notes’

Archaeologists have unearthed a massive trove of ancient Egyptian notes scribbled on broken pots.

Humans have always needed a place to jot things down. Long before sticky notes and smartphone reminders, the people of ancient Egypt recorded their shopping lists, school exercises, religious sacrificial certificates, and tax receipts on broken pieces of pottery.







Now, a joint mission by the University of Tübingen and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has recovered an astonishing 43,000 of these inscribed shards, known as ostraca. Excavated between 2005 and 2026 at the ancient settlement of Athribis, this vast collection offers an unprecedented window into the mundane routines of an ancient civilization.


The sheer volume makes Athribis the most productive site for ostraca found thus far. It comfortably eclipses the famous finds at Deir el-Medina, the ancient working-class village nestled in the Valley of the Kings.
