China's Sany in talks to build wind turbine factory in Egypt
A delegation from China’s Sany Group has met with Egypt’s electricity minister to discuss the potential construction of the country’s first wind turbine manufacturing plant, as Cairo steps up efforts to localise manufacturing of renewable energy equipment.
Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, held talks with the Chinese manufacturer as part of a broader series of meetings with international companies producing electrical equipment for clean power, according to a government statement. The discussions focused on Sany’s plans to establish a wind turbine factory in Egypt and transfer its technology to the local market.
The talks align with Egypt’s National Energy Strategy and the ministry’s action plan to accelerate the energy transition, expand the share of renewables in the power mix and strengthen domestic industry. The government is seeking to support local manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports and promote the use of locally produced equipment across the electricity sector.
Discussions covered models for joint work, partnership structures and Sany’s experience setting up manufacturing operations outside China, as well as its strategy for entering the Egyptian market.
The meeting followed earlier discussions held during Esmat’s visit to Beijing last month and focused on both wind and solar energy. In addition to wind turbines, Sany outlined its capabilities in manufacturing equipment and components for solar and wind power plants, as Egypt positions itself as a regional hub for renewable energy development.
