Egypt partners with Taj Hotels to revive Historic Continental Hotel in Cairo
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony for the management and operation of the historic Continental Hotel in downtown Cairo, marking the first entry of the global Taj brand from India into the Egyptian market. This strategic move aims to revive one of Egypt's most significant historical landmarks, located at Opera Square in the heart of Cairo's Khedivial area, in alignment with the state's efforts to develop heritage sites with unique architectural value.
Madbouly emphasized that this project is a successful model of partnership between the state and the global private sector, supporting the country's vision to preserve and economically invest in architectural heritage in a modern and sustainable way. The initiative is expected to boost the tourism sector, create job opportunities, and enhance Cairo's status as a global tourist destination.
Minister of Public Business Sector, Mohamed Shimi, confirmed that the signing aligns with the ministry's strategy to revive state-owned tourism and hotel assets, maximizing their economic potential. The ministry has launched the project to restore the Continental Hotel, with construction already underway as of the second quarter of this year, following the state’s plan to redevelop the area while preserving its historic charm.
Shimi further stated that the collaboration with Taj Hotels reflects growing confidence in the Egyptian economy and tourism investment climate. He highlighted Cairo’s rich historical and cultural assets, reinforcing its potential to regain its place as a leading global tourism destination.
The Continental Hotel, established in 1870, is one of Cairo's key historical landmarks, overlooking Azbakeya Garden and Opera Square. The hotel is set to be transformed into a five-star establishment with approximately 300 rooms, while maintaining its historic architectural style and original façade.
Taj Hotels, a global leader in the hospitality industry with over 335 hotels in more than 150 locations worldwide, will manage the Continental Hotel. The hotel is owned by the Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels (EGOTH), part of the Holding Company for Tourism and Hotels, affiliated with the Ministry of Public Business Sector.
