Egypt and Cyprus have signed a set of landmark agreements to transport natural gas from Cyprus’s Cronos field to Egypt, integrating it into the country’s extensive gas infrastructure network.

In a statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said the agreements outline the technical and commercial frameworks governing the transfer, supply, processing, and liquefaction of Cypriot gas for export. They also set out terms for utilizing Egypt’s advanced gas infrastructure.

Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi described the signing as the outcome of productive cooperation between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, emphasizing their shared vision to enhance bilateral energy ties and accelerate the linkage of Cypriot gas fields to Egypt’s facilities.

Speaking at the East Mediterranean Energy Conference (EMC) in Limassol, Cyprus, Badawi said the new agreements reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for natural gas trade and distribution, while simultaneously supporting Cyprus’s ambitions to monetize and export its gas resources through Egypt’s liquefaction plants.

At the conference, the two sides also initialed a tariff agreement for the Cronos field project between the ministry and global energy giants Eni and TotalEnergies, alongside a separate deal governing the handling, processing, and transportation of gas from the field.

The Cronos field is estimated to hold about 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, with Egypt targeting 2027 to start receiving Cypriot gas for re-export to Europe. The two nations are also exploring ways to link the Aphrodite field—which holds around 3.5 trillion cubic feet of reserves—to Egypt’s liquefaction plants to further expand export capacity to European markets.

Earlier this year, in April, Cypriot authorities announced that Chevron would begin a seabed survey in the Eastern Mediterranean, paving the way for a new pipeline connecting Cyprus’s offshore gas fields to Egypt’s processing facilities, underscoring the deepening regional energy partnership.
