The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has entered into a cooperation agreement with UAE-based K&K to finalize the studies for the Egypt–Europe electricity interconnection project through Italy, using subsea transmission cables.

Under the agreement, both sides will prepare and execute the technical, environmental, and financial feasibility studies required to advance the project. The collaboration also involves taking the necessary steps to initiate implementation of the interconnection between Egypt’s national grid and the unified European electricity network via Italy.

This milestone aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to cement its role as a regional energy hub, expand clean energy exports to Europe, and strengthen cross-border electricity connections, particularly with European and neighboring countries. Such efforts aim to position Egypt as a central node for energy transfer and exchange across Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly affirmed that the agreement reflects Egypt’s ongoing commitment to electricity interconnection projects with Europe and to maximizing the use of renewable resources. He described the deal as a significant step in enhancing Egypt’s regional and global energy standing.

Meanwhile, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat noted that the interconnection with Europe is a strategic initiative to export Egypt’s surplus renewable energy, targeting a capacity of up to 3,000 megawatts (MW). He highlighted that this project supports global energy transition goals, reduces carbon emissions, and strengthens energy security at both regional and international levels.

Esmat further emphasized the sector’s dedication to expanding clean energy, diversifying energy sources, and lowering dependence on fossil fuels, in line with Egypt’s national strategy to boost the share of renewables within the country’s electricity mix.
