CAF Secures Eur 450m Deal to Modernise Cairo Metro
CAF, a leading Spanish rolling stock manufacturer, has entered into three high-value contracts totaling over €450 million with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT). The agreements will focus on the modernisation and maintenance of the Cairo Metro’s fleet, particularly the trains operating on Line 2, along with the maintenance of Line 1 trains. This project is a part of Egypt’s broader effort to improve its public transport system and enhance the metro’s efficiency, comfort, and longevity.
Modernisation of Line 2 Fleet
The first contract entails a major modernisation of 39 trains on Line 2. These trains will undergo comprehensive work to extend their service life by 30 years. This will include the replacement of crucial components such as the traction equipment, train control and management systems (TCMS), and auxiliary converters. Additionally, the braking system will be upgraded to improve safety and operational efficiency.
CAF will also refurbish the interiors of these trains, making them more comfortable and modern for passengers. New passenger information systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, and onboard Wi-Fi will be installed to improve the customer experience and ensure safety within the trains. These upgrades will ensure that passengers travel in a more efficient, secure, and technologically advanced environment.
Enhancing Maintenance Facilities at Shubra
As part of the modernisation programme, CAF will also enhance the workshops at Shubra, which are responsible for maintaining the trains. These upgrades will not only facilitate the maintenance operations for the newly modernised fleet but will also prepare the workshops for mass production under the fleet modernisation plan. This ensures that the maintenance of the fleet is streamlined and that CAF can quickly address any issues that may arise.
