Egypt invests EGP 2t to overhaul transport sector

The railway upgrade plan, worth around 225 billion pounds, includes the purchase of 110 new locomotives from General Electric and signalling system.

Egypt has injected around 2 trillion Egyptian pounds into the transport sector between 2014 and 2024, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Industry Kamel El-Wazir. Speaking on the sidelines of the 10th edition of the Builders of Egypt Forum, El-Wazir said the ministry has built 7,000 km of new roads to support newly established industrial zones, alongside the development of 10,000 km of internal roads to improve freight movement between governorates. He added that 10,000 km of railway lines are currently being upgraded to enhance service quality and reduce accident rates. The railway upgrade plan, worth around 225 billion pounds, includes the purchase of 110 new locomotives from General Electric and signalling system electrification projects valued at 50 billion pounds.
