Century Cruises growing in US and Europe, plans Egypt newbuilds
China's Century Cruises underwent big changes during the pandemic, and is now growing customer sourcing in North America and expanding in Europe and Egypt, where it's investing in shipyards, with new vessels planned.
Ocean cruising is in the cards, too, according to David Fredericks, SVP sales and marketing, who's based in the company's new South Florida office.
There are so many changes, "We call it a 36-year-old start-up," Fredericks quipped.
Century is part of Gaund Holdings, a Chongqing-based conglomerate that also owns a shipyard, manufactures lithium batteries and is now investing in yards in Egypt and Europe.
Yangtze fleet renewed
During COVID, when cruises couldn't operate, Century jettisoned its diesel vessels and built all electric propulsion ships. One of those, Century Oasis, was a finalist in the 2023 Seatrade Cruise Awards for "River Cruise Innovation of the Year." The fleet's average age is now three years. The next newbuild, the 196-passenger Century Dream, is due out in 2026.
Because of the Yangtze's depth and breadth, the vessels are much bigger than those on Europe's rivers, with roomier all-veranda cabins, more public spaces, tall atriums and wide corridors, bigger fitness areas and spas, theater shows and separate VIP dining for upper category accommodations. Personalized service, afternoon tea and tai chi on deck are among the amenities.
