IFC, AMEA Power back Egypt’s first utility-scale battery storage project

Developed in partnership with AMEA Power and the Egyptian government, the project will integrate a 300 MWh BESS with the newly operational 500 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Kom Ombo, Aswan.

The battery system forms part of Egypt’s 4GW Emergency Renewable Energy Program, which aims to meet rising electricity demand and reduce dependence on imported natural gas.

Once fully operational in July 2025, the BESS will deliver around 100,000 MWh of electricity annually, avoiding nearly 20,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais said the company is committed to accelerating renewable energy projects in Egypt and the region.

IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop underscored the role of battery storage in enhancing the resilience and efficiency of Egypt’s electricity grid.

Since 2017, Egypt has attracted strong international support for renewable energy projects, with over 2.1 GW in solar PV and 2.8 GW in wind power backed by development finance.
