According to a statement by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities on Monday, a newly formed alliance, comprising international and Egyptian firms, has commenced consultancy work to prepare a comprehensive strategic master plan for developing the Saqqara–Sphinx area and enhancing tourism in it.

The alliance includes Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo (WATG), a renowned architectural firm with offices in several world capitals. WATG has delivered projects in over 160 countries across six continents, bringing extensive global experience to the initiative.

Senior Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities officials and officials representing Giza Governorate met with representatives of the alliance, including international and Egyptian entities, to review progress on the integrated strategic master plan. This plan aims to redevelop the historical zone and enhance its tourism potential according to global best practices.

The project supports the Egyptian government’s strategic vision to promote sustainable tourism around the Giza pyramids, enrich the visitor experience, and safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage.

It also coincides with the recent conclusion of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Egypt, which conducted the fifth review of the country’s $8 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme. The IMF commended Egypt’s fiscal discipline, improved oversight of public infrastructure, and steady progress towards macroeconomic stability. Read the full IMF statement here.

The Saqqara–Sphinx project reflects Egypt’s broader strategy to strengthen its tourism sector, boost hard currency revenues, and stimulate job creation in the post-review phase.

The master plan prioritises using innovative technologies and digital platforms to enhance visitor services and Egypt’s global tourism outreach. It also underscores partnerships with local businesses, sustainable investment practices, and a commitment to transparent governance.

A dedicated performance framework will assess the project’s success, using key performance indicators such as employment generation, revenue growth, and infrastructure improvements to secure long-term benefits for local communities and the national economy.

Similarly, Egypt is undertaking major tourism and hospitality projects to consolidate its status as a premier global travel destination.

In a ministerial meeting on Wednesday, Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shimy highlighted ongoing initiatives, including restoring historic hotels, upgrading existing facilities, and constructing new hotels to expand national accommodation capacity.
