China’s Xinyi Glass has announced a $700 million investment to establish a solar panel glass manufacturing facility in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).

According to an official statement, the project will be executed in two phases and is set to produce 1.5 million tons of solar panel glass and 1.1 million tons of high-purity silica sand annually.

The latter is a key raw material in the production of solar glass, playing a crucial role in the solar energy industry. A significant portion of the plant’s output is expected to be exported, supporting both regional and international solar markets.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has voiced strong support for the project, emphasizing the need for swift execution.

He has directed the relevant authorities to provide the necessary utilities and infrastructure to accelerate the plant’s development and ensure its rapid operationalization.

The company is currently in the process of securing regulatory approvals before commencing construction, marking a significant step in boosting Egypt’s renewable energy and industrial sectors.

If the project proves successful, Xinyi Glass has expressed interest in expanding its collaboration with the Egyptian government to establish additional glass manufacturing operations within the country.

This expansion could further enhance Egypt’s position as a regional hub for glass production, creating new investment opportunities and strengthening the industrial supply chain for renewable energy components.

Egypt has been actively working toward localizing solar power component manufacturing as part of its broader renewable energy strategy.

In October, the government identified solar cells as one of 12 strategic products it aims to produce domestically, reinforcing efforts to strengthen the country’s solar energy sector.

By promoting local manufacturing, Egypt aims to reduce reliance on imports, drive economic growth, and position itself as a key player in the global renewable energy market.
