Egypt Aims to Become a Leader in Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production
Egypt's Minister of Electricity, Mohamed Shaker, announced the country's integrated strategy to become a frontrunner in low-carbon hydrogen production. These statements were made at the inauguration of the Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ARFREE). Aiming to increase the country's share in the international hydrogen trade from 5 percent to eight percent, Egypt is cooperating with private sector companies, including Siemens, to maximize energy efficiency. This strategy comes in response to the country's growing energy consumption and treats energy as a matter of national security. The country has already signed 23 memoranda of understanding with major global companies and nine framework agreements with alliances to boost the production of green hydrogen. As part of this strategy, a deal with Siemens has been made to produce 14 megawatts of energy over the next two and a half years, an unprecedented development in Egypt.
