In a groundbreaking study conducted by Egypt’s Mansoura University, researchers have discovered that fertilizers rich in calcium, magnesium, and zinc can significantly boost the growth of potatoes and other tubers. The research, recently published in the Journal of Plant Production, was led by M.K.F. El-Tawashy.

As Brand Spur in Nigeria reports in this news article, the study specifically tested the effects of BRANDT Manni-Plex Ca-Mag and BRANDT Manni-Plex Ca-Zn on potato growth. Results showed that the foliar application of these calcium- and magnesium-rich fertilizers, especially on newly reclaimed soil, considerably increased potato yields in both size and weight.

El-Tawashy emphasized that this could lead to higher profitability for farmers, as the enhanced quantity and quality of potatoes can fetch better market prices.

Furthermore, the research highlighted the importance of using the right fertilizers and application techniques, which can help in reducing costs related to inefficient fertilization methods. The study also found that these mineral-rich fertilizers not only stimulate plant growth but also increase the overall chlorophyll content, enhancing the marketability of the produce.

El-Tawashy believes that these findings are a significant stride towards developing more sustainable fertilization strategies for potato production. By refining their fertilization practices, farmers can mitigate the risk of crop failure and bolster the sustainability of their operations.
