During his visit to Egypt, Somesh Adukia, Canon’s managing director for Central and North Africa unveiled to Ahram Online his company’s plans for the Egyptian market.

Adukia said the ongoing global and local economic challenges have impacted Canon’s operations in the Egyptian market, yet the company has approached this situation with a sense of positivity and a firm commitment to Egypt's growth and success.

Ahram Online: How do you perceive the measures Egypt has been adopting to boost its digital transformation?

Somesh Adukia: Egypt has made significant strides in embracing digital technologies and promoting a digital-first economy. Egypt has recognized the importance of fostering digital skills and literacy among its population.

The government has launched initiatives to enhance digital education and training programmes, equipping people with the necessary skills to participate in the digital economy. This proactive approach to developing digital talent will not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the overall growth and competitiveness of the local market. Egypt has been actively promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital space.

Initiatives such as startup incubators, technology parks, and funding programmes have emerged to support the growth of digital startups and foster a vibrant ecosystem. These efforts have resulted in a thriving entrepreneurial culture, encouraging creativity and technological advancements in the local market.

The actions Egypt took to boost digital transformation in the local market are commendable. Its commitment to creating an enabling environment, investing in digital infrastructure, promoting digital skills, and fostering innovation demonstrates a clear vision for a digitally driven future. These initiatives not only benefit the Egyptian economy but also open up opportunities for businesses, organizations such as Canon, individuals, and investors to participate in the global digital landscape.

AO: How have the global and local economic challenges affected your operations in Egypt?

SA: The ongoing global and local economic challenges have indeed had an impact on our operations in the Egyptian market. However, I want to emphasize that we approach this situation with a sense of positivity and a firm commitment to Egypt's growth and success.

Egypt holds a significant position as a large country in Africa, both in terms of population and its contribution to the continent's GDP. Recognizing the importance of this market, Canon remains dedicated to overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities for innovation and resilience.

Last year, we faced hurdles influenced by the devaluation of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar, resulting in regional economic challenges. Despite these difficulties, we firmly believe that challenges also present opportunities. We understand the difficulties faced by the people due to high inflation, and we empathize with their concerns. However, we have witnessed remarkable resilience among Egyptian consumers and businesses, which instills confidence in the future.
