On Wednesday, the Egyptian Customs Authority set an amount of 150 grams of gold, equivalent to 10,000 dollars, allowed to enter Egypt per passenger.

As for the gold for women’s jewelry, the Customs Authority is evaluated based on the traveler's physical shape, and it is known mostly through their bank accounts.

This comes in light of the gold price hikes in Egypt, which are significantly higher than the international prices of gold.

As a result, many Egyptians resorted to legal ways to have cheaper gold from abroad especially since it is a safe savings vessel.

Meanwhile, Cairo airport customs called on all passengers to disclose their gold, whether jewelry or bullion upon their arrival at the airport, to avoid charges of smuggling.

The Customs Authority noted that each traveler must pay a fee of 24 % in the event that the value of his gold possession exceeds the specified percentage.

Dr. Maged Mousa, Director General of Cairo Airport Customs, has recently said that women wearing gold jewelry as social status and in reasonable quantities are exempted from customs as it is not commercialized.

He explained that citizens concealing their possession will be charged with tax evasion and forced to pay customs fees, which are about 24% of the gold price.

In addition to the interest fees and the Ministry of Foreign Trade fees, in the event of non-reconciliation, the shipment is sent abroad again, with the citizen bearing these costs.
