Egypt’s renewable energy production peaked at nearly 10.08 gigawatts (GW) in 2022, accounting for around 29.6 percent of the total energy mix, according to official data.

Total electricity output is currently estimated at 33.8 GW and output is set to sharply rise after the completion of projects signed over the past months, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company said in a report published in local newspapers.

The government-owned company said Egypt’s main renewable energy sources include solar, wind and nuclear, adding that a control centre for such projects is being built in Cairo at a cost of around 850 million Egyptian pounds ($35 million).

The report, carried by Addustour and other dailies, said Egypt is also pushing ahead with projects to link its power network with grids in nearby countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, Sudan, Cyprus and Greece.
