Italy, Lebanon and Egypt are all involved through such agricultural areas as Barbagia di Seulo and the Nuoro province in Sardinia, the Al-Iskandariyah and Al-Buhayrah governorates in Egypt and the Chouf and Mount Lebanon zones in south-central Lebanon.

The about two million euros in funding is from the ENPI CBC MED cross-border cooperation program. Partners include the University of Alexandria, the Beirut Arab University, the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, the Italian-Arab Chamber of Commerce and the Italian Biomass Association. The project will set up systems to valorize forestry and agriculture resources and raise awareness about biomass as an energy source to reduce the abandonment of rural and mountainous areas in Italy, Lebanon and Egypt. The GR.ENE.CO project focuses on public administrations, farms and SMEs operating in the green energy sector of the three countries, and is expected to create jobs.
