Egypt is aiming to position itself as a global garment and textile powerhouse, with a bold plan to raise export revenues to $12 billion by 2031. The target, announced in recent discussions between Abdel Aziz Elsherif, head of the Egyptian Commercial Service (ECS), and Fadel Marzouk, chairperson of the Apparel Export Council of Egypt (AECE), reflects both the sector’s recent momentum and Egypt’s growing role in reshaping global supply chains.

a sector already on the rise

From January to June 2025, Egypt’s garment exports reached $1.608 billion, up 25 percent year-on-year. This surge shows the resilience and competitiveness of local manufacturers, who have weathered global trade uncertainty and shifting supply dynamics. Marzouk projects full-year growth of up to 30 percent, which would place Egypt among the fastest-growing textile exporters worldwide.

leveraging shifting supply chains

Global supply networks are being redrawn by geopolitical tensions, higher shipping costs, and the search for diversified suppliers. Europe has emerged as one of the most promising destinations for Egyptian ready-to-wear exports, as buyers look for stable, cost-efficient partners outside of Asia. Egypt’s proximity, trade agreements, and established production base give it a strategic advantage to fill this gap.

new role for commercial offices abroad

Elsherif highlighted the underused potential of Egypt’s commercial offices worldwide. These offices, which track regulatory changes and market opportunities, are set to play a bigger role in connecting local exporters with major buyers, supporting entry into new markets, and guiding compliance with international standards. Stronger cooperation between these offices and the AECE is expected to give businesses clearer pathways to expansion.

africa as an emerging market

Beyond Europe, Africa is gaining strategic importance. Rising consumer demand in fast-growing economies across the continent presents a new frontier for Egyptian garment producers. As African middle-class populations expand, demand for affordable, high-quality ready-to-wear is expected to rise, positioning Egypt as a natural supplier due to geographic and cultural ties.

investment and competitiveness

The export growth strategy is also tied to attracting more foreign investment, particularly from manufacturing leaders in Turkey, China, Vietnam, and India. By integrating advanced production technologies, expanding capacity, and boosting efficiency, Egyptian businesses can enhance their competitiveness while tapping into these global networks.

what this means for Egyptian businesses

For local manufacturers, suppliers, and even logistics companies, the $12 billion target is more than a headline—it’s a call to prepare for deeper integration with global markets. Businesses that align early with the ECS and AECE’s coordinated efforts, invest in quality upgrades, and actively pursue international certifications will be better placed to ride this wave of growth.

Egypt’s garment industry is no longer just competing locally; it is on track to become a regional export engine with global reach. For businesses across the supply chain, now is the time to position themselves as part of that journey.
