Egypt accords top priority to its citizens abroad

Minister Elorabi affirmed that the Libyan authorities should immediately release the Egyptian detainees. He affirmed as well, that Egypt accords top priority to the Egyptians abroad, especially those detained in Libyan prisons, due to the gravity of what they might be exposed to under current events. The Minister outlined that his first declaration after assuming office was the necessity of releasing the Egyptian detainees.

The Minister stated that releasing the Egyptians detained in Libyan prisons is a popular demand accompanied by a state of public rage due to that detention. He highlighted that the detainees are Egyptians who served in various fields in Libya and should not, under no circumstances be detained under such inhumane conditions, which might endanger their lives.

Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Menha Bakhoum stated that during his meeting with the detainees' families, the Minister made a phone call with the Libyan Intelligence Chief, and demanded the immediate release of the Egyptians imprisoned by the Libyan authorities, to the utmost, before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Elorabi expressed his personal desire and preparedness to travel to Libya to receive the first group of the released Egyptians immediately after being released.

The Spokeswoman outlined that the Minister informed his Libyan counterpart, who is currently visiting Moscow, through a verbal message conveyed by the Egyptian Ambassador to Federal Russia, affirming that Egypt attaches great importance to freeing its citizens jailed in Libya, and demanded their immediate release.

The Foreign Minister also summoned,the Chargé d'affaires of the Cairo Libyan-Arab Relations Office, and informed him of the necessity of the immediate release of Egyptian citizens in the prisons of Tajoura, Zara, Abu Salim, and Gadida. He also assured him of the utmost importance that Egypt attaches to this issue. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister demanded the Libyan Chargé d'affaires to deliver Egyptian citizens who are serving sentences according to legal judgement in criminal causes to be complemented in Egypt, pointing out that there is a judicial agreement between Egypt and Libya allowing this process.
