For the first time in Egypt's history, students from technical and applied technology schools can apply directly to study computer science and artificial intelligence at public universities.

The Supreme Council of Universities approved the move in early June, a major step toward educational inclusion for vocational students. The policy shift, coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Technical Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, was rolled out under the supervision of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

A shift in access

Previously, only students with the Thanaweya Amma (general secondary certificate) or equivalent qualifications could enter top university programs such as AI and computer science. Technical school graduates were left behind unless they completed a complex equivalency process.

Now, those holding diplomas from three- and five-year technical schools, applied technology schools, and post-secondary technical institutes can apply directly through a special admission system. Each category will have its own quota and minimum score threshold.

What are applied technology schools?

Applied technology schools are government-run institutions designed to offer vocational education that meets international standards. These schools are established through partnerships with private and public sector companies and provide training in areas like AI, telecommunications, industrial automation, and logistics.

Their curriculum is based on three pillars: academic studies, technical specialization, and hands-on training. Students gain practical experience through company placements, and teachers are trained using international methods.

From just three schools in 2018, the number has risen to 70 across 19 governorates by 2024, with a target of 90 schools by the 2025/2026 academic year.

A spotlight on WE ICT schools

Among the standout institutions is the WE ICT Schools for Applied Technology, launched in 2020 by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in collaboration with Telecom Egypt.

These schools focus on producing graduates who are ready for careers in the ICT sector, offering both Egyptian and international certifications. Students graduate with technical diplomas, job experience, and skills designed to meet local and global industry needs.

Why this matters

The new policy marks a turning point in Egypt’s educational system, breaking down barriers that previously limited vocational students’ opportunities for advancement. It reflects a broader national strategy aimed at digital transformation and economic development by cultivating a highly skilled workforce.

For thousands of students enrolled in applied technology programs, the message is clear: a university education — and a career in AI or computer science — is no longer out of reach.
