Egypt’s renewable energy in 2022 broke a record, reaching more than 29.5% of the Egyptian energy mix with 10.08 gigawatts.

Egypt generates renewable energy mainly from Solar, wind and nuclear sources according to a report by Al Dostor.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company stated that Egypt’s total production of electricity is at 33.8 GW, but this will change with the projects signed with partners and neighbours to link the electricity grids, like Saudi, Sudan, Jordan, Libya, Cyprus and Greece.

COP27 was a great opportunity for Egypt to sign agreements to expand its renewable portfolio. It managed to sign more than 16 MOUs with international companies and entities to generate 55GW of electricity.

One of those MOUs is to build the world's largest wind farm, set to be on the Gulf of Suez with a capacity of 10 GW. And another is a solar park that will be built in Hurghada with funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Egypt had earlier canceled a 50 MW solar park in Aswan, due to lack of cash flow, as reported by Zawya. However, the government is planning to give the project to the private sector to implement.
