2020 is set to be another year where e-commerce grows more and 2020 is set to be another year where e-commerce grows more and more, thus every online business will need to adapt to the new trends in the online consumer world.

Most of the adjustments businesses have to take are not based on changes in consumers demographic or behavior but rather the advance in technologies that those consumers use. Payfort has selected the biggest 4 trends that are expected to influence e-commerce and what you need to invest in in 2020 to make your online business thrive.

1-      Make your business mobile friendly:

With the rise of mobile payments, digital wallets and other forms of payments via mobile, along with the fact that these methods of payment are becoming more and more secure; this means mobiles are increasingly becoming less of a “just browsing” medium to more of “complete a purchase medium”.

It is expected that purchases through mobile will reach 70% of e-commerce sales in 2020.

2-      Invest in your products pages, not the homepage:

New consumers, who are re-directed to your store through a search (which is probably the majority of the traffic) will arrive to the page of the product they searched. Yes, the homepage is of course important as the storefront of your e-shop, however, the home page is for a user who knows your shop. While the product page being informative, user friendly and clear means more visitors converted to customers.

3-      Text is fine, but you need a video:

Having a video description of the product is becoming more and more important to closing a sale, especially with younger audience who would rather watch than read. It gives a better view of the product, helps you visualize it, understand its specs and eventually make a purchase.

4-      Voice search is here to stay:

The accuracy of voice recognition is now at a high of 95% with apps like Alexa and Google assistant and I is expected that 50% of mobile searches will be via voice in 2020. Bit by bit, more consumers will depend on voice search. Thus you need to optimize your site to “long tail keywords” which are 3 to 4 keyword phrases that are most likely used by consumers searching for a specific item. If you use long tail keywords that are product specific to what you are selling, it’s more likely the customer will land on the correct page, and make a purchase.
