Egypt cuts back on longtime bread subsidies

Egypt has increased the fixed price of subsidized bread from 0.05 Egyptian pounds ($0.0010) a loaf to 0.20 Egyptian pounds ($0.0042).

The Ministry directed a study to determine production costs based on factors including bread type, fuel type, and the sector to which bakery belongs.

More than LE130 billion are borne by the government during the fiscal year to provide wheat, whether from farmers or importers.

The country allocated $59.69 million for a down-payment to state grain buyers to purchase wheat from local farmers.

This move, although necessary for economic sustainability, carries considerable political risks given the historical sensitivity surrounding bread.
