Censorship or protection?
Egypt, India and US universities are moving to block TikTok for different reasons. Germany is suing Twitter and China is swift in fighting Deepfakes.
India blocks videos
The Indian government is against the BBC report about Indian Prime Minister Modi. The minister of information and broadcasting wants several YouTube videos and over 50 tweets to be blocked for undermining the Indian government.
What does this mean for you as a company? inform yourself about the laws of the state you are operating in and obey them.
US universities block TikTok
Public universities in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas restricted access to TikTok through their WIFI networks and university owned phones. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company and there was evidence of TikTok spying on journalists in the US. India also banned TikTok for the same reason.
What does that mean for you? Ensure that the company-owned cell phones that you give to your employees don’t have apps that allow spying.
Egypt considers blocking TikTok
In Egypt, it is not about spying but about societal values. TikTok is accused of having videos of nudity, pornography, violence and bullying. The creators create videos that will go viral and make them money, with no regards to public morals and values. The lawyer Samir Sabry is accusing the Prime Minister and Minister of Information for not blocking the app.
What does that mean for you? Beware of influencers who collect followers with inappropriate content.
China passes a law to regulate deep fakes
Deep fake is the technology by which your photos can be used in any form, for example your photos can be used on pornographic videos, China has a law in action since 10 January. Taiwan, England, Wales and US states are trying to include it in laws as well, soon Egypt will follow.
What does that mean for you? Nothing, personality protection is not a subject for companies but copyright is.
Germany sues Twitter
Elon Musk wanted to have free speech on Twitter. Germany forbids swastika and other Nazi symbols, and now organisations are collecting examples of nazi symbols being used on Twitter, as after Elon took over there is a lot of right wing propaganda on Twitter.
What does that mean for you as a company? Watch out for your advertising environment, on which websites are you active? Especially on social media you need to be very careful. Advertisers are quitting Twitter for having a negative environment.
