Vodafone Egypt has decided to launch Bladna Mobile, the first Arab telephone operator to hit the market in Italy. The initiative aims to reach a total of 150,000 subscribers over the first four years, offering Arab immigrants living in Italy the chance to call Egypt, Morocco and the rest of North Africa from their mobile phones at rates similar to those for calls within Italy.

"We have been active since December 5, but the real launch was on Saturday at the Bladna music festival that we organised in Milan to publicise ourselves," Denise D'Elia, the company's chair and chief executive told ANSAmed.

The Milan-based company has set up a call centre in Italian and in Egyptian dialect, and already has 80 retail outlets, most of them in the north of Italy, "where there is the highest concentration of immigrants from countries of interest to us," D'Elia says.

The group's chief executive did not disclose the total investment made by Vodafone Egypt to launch the scheme but explained that "when fully up and running, in three to four years, we will have about 10 million euros per year in investments".
