On February 21, 2011, Makro Egypt reopened their Qalioubayia branch despite losing around 15 million Egyptian pounds, when their store was looted during the initial days of the Egyptian revolution. In an amazing show of national spirit, Makro employees and Egyptians pulled together to ensure the reopening of the store just days after Egyptians were given the go ahead to return back to work.

The reopening of Makro’s Qalioubayia store comes in the wake of several extremely difficult weeks, with Makro experiencing additional setbacks with the loss of an estimated 120 million Egyptian pounds in fire damage to their Salam City store. Despite these roadblocks, Makro continues to commit to maintaining a workforce of nearly 500 employees, including 150 employees working on the development of the Haram store and another 270 Salam City store employees, whose salaries continue to be paid despite these temporary closures. Plans are also underway to start the rebuilding of the Salam City store in the coming months.
