Schindler: "Google is ready for Facebook"

Head of Google Northern Europe Philipp Schindler talks about the latest Internet trends & how Google'll face social networks like Facebook & Twitter.

Social networks like Facebook and Twitter can become a threat to Internet-giants like Google. Yet, in an interview with German newspaper “Die Welt”, Head of Google Northern Europe Philipp Schindler stated that he was confident his organization was ready for the challenge.

“We started as a search engine, but our vision was always much broader: We wanted to make the information in this world available to the people,” Schindler told “Die Welt”.

Today, there are about 100 different Google-services, ranging from currency calculations to actual Google-Mobiles – which are built by partners like Samsung and HTC.

Schindler explained: “The number of services is not that important to us. What’s most important is the answer to the question ‘Do we have the adequate products for the coming big trends?’”

According to Schindler, there are about four main trends concerning the Internet at this time: First – of course – the “Search-trend”. People use the Internet to search for everything.

Yet, when one looks at the second-biggest search engine in the world – YouTube, one must notice that it is not all about just searching, but more about audiovisuals. Every minute, about 48 hours of video footage are uploaded. This trend was made possible through fast Internet-connections and cheap video cameras.

The third trend is mobile Internet on Smartphones and tablets. “In this case, we are leading with our Android-Smartphone. Everyday, about 550,000 Androids are activated,” Schindler reveals.

The fourth trend would be the social face of the Internet. Social Networks like Facebook and Twitter are spreading like wildfire. Schindler confessed: “We did not intensively concentrate on this field at the beginning, but now with Google+, we have an exciting offer.”

Since nations handle the Internet differently, and since each nation and culture sees the Internet in its own, unique way, it is important for Google to conduct researches, in order to understand what their global customers want. In Germany, Google is currently studying the social effects of the Internet on people and is focusing on issues like data protection. On the other hand, Google opened an institute in France, where the correlation between Internet and Culture is being researched.

In Greece, for example, the people are searching for everything related to the economic crisis at the moment. “The ‘Search’ is a very dynamic and active creature. Everyday, 20% of daily search terms or keywords are brand-new. That is why we cannot say ‘The Germans are searching for this’ or ‘The Americans are looking for that’. Searches are mostly driven by the latest events,” Schindler explained.
